Lt. Gov. O’Brien Celebrates Colorado Rugby Month
DENVER - Lt. Governor Barbara O’Brien officially announced Monday that June is Colorado Rugby Month and 
presented Gov. Bill Ritter’s proclamation to Rick Cortez, President of the Eastern Rockies Rugby Football Union.
The proclamation comes in anticipation of the two major international rugby tournaments Colorado will host in the month of June. The 2009 Churchill Cup will be held at Infinity Park in Glendale on June 6, 10, and 14 and at Dick’s Sporting Good Park on June 21, marking the first time that this international rugby tournament will be held entirely in the United States.
On June 23 and 27, also at Infinity Park, Colorado will host the Women’s CanAm matches, featuring international tests between the USA and Canadian Women’s National Teams.
In addition, there are some major national level events taking place within this next month at Infinity Park, as USA Rugby will host the USA Rugby Men’s Club Championships on May 30-31 and the National Guard Collegiate All-Stars on June 11-13. These two matches will showcase the best men’s rugby players the nation has to offer at both the club and collegiate level, respectively.
“Rugby is a growing sport with great traditional roots,” said Lt. Gov. O’Brien. “Colorado has the only municipally-owned rugby stadium in the nation at Glendale’s Infinity Park and Colorado, as a whole, should be honored to host these prestigious international rugby events in June.”
Lt. Governor O’Brien also recognized state rugby champions Denver’s East High School Barbarians and Jack White, the Colorado Youth Rugby Player of the Year.
Representatives from the Glendale Raptors, Infinity Park, Denver Highlanders Rugby Club, Denver Barbarians Rugby Club, Colorado Youth Rugby, USA Rugby and the Rocky Mountain Challenge Tournament were all on hand at the Colorado State Capital Building to celebrate this proclamation.
